Massive Airport Strike Brings Germany’s Air Travel to a Standstill!
Travelers across Germany are facing major disruptions today as a massive strike by airport workers has brought air travel to a near standstill. The 24-hour strike, organized by the powerful ver.di service workers union, started at midnight and has forced the cancellation of thousands of flights across 13 major airports.
Some of the biggest hubs affected include Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, Hamburg, Düsseldorf, and Cologne/Bonn. Many travelers have been left stranded with little warning, creating long lines and mounting frustration at departure terminals.
Flights Canceled, Thousands Stranded
The impact of the strike has been severe. At Frankfurt Airport, the busiest in Germany, a staggering 94% of all flights have been canceled. Berlin Brandenburg Airport has also come to a halt, with no regular departures or arrivals taking place.
According to the German Airports Association (ADV), more than 3,500 flights have been scrapped, affecting around 560,000 passengers. Many airlines, including Lufthansa, have been forced to cancel their services, leading to widespread delays and frustration.
Why Are Airport Workers Striking?
At the heart of the strike is an ongoing dispute over wages and working conditions. The ver.di union is demanding:
- An 8% salary increase
- A minimum monthly raise of €350
- More paid time off
- Higher bonuses for employees
Employers have pushed back, arguing that these demands are too expensive to meet. Negotiations are set to continue later this month, but with tensions running high, there are concerns that more strikes could follow.
